Looking Closer is a six-session workshop exploring portrait documentary as a space for encounter. Participants will learn to approach filmmaking through observation, listening and curiosity, while thinking critically about the ways images shape how we understand other people.
Through a combination of film screenings, conversations and practical exercises, participants will develop their own short portrait film. We will experiment with different documentary approaches — from observational and poetic filmmaking to self-portrait, diary film and found footage — while exploring questions of representation, authorship and perspective.
The workshop is open to different levels of filmmaking experience and requires only basic equipment. Rather than focusing on a single way of making a portrait, the aim is to help each participant develop their own cinematic language and way of seeing.
The workshop will end with a public screening of the films within the Cinemaximiliaan community.
