This SATURDAY we’re going to Ostend where we were kindly invited by Chambre D’O Festival to do two screenings! We will be hosted in the living room of a local Ostendenaar, home-screening style!

We decided to take a deep dive into the work of Angela Al Souliman – showing her short, Cheers! (2018, 19’) at 19:00 and Jasmine Revelation (2019, 10’) at 21:00. After each film session we will host a Q&A session with the director.

Director Bio:

Angela Al Souliman holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Aleppo and had a career in Syrian media. Following imprisonment under Asaad’s regime, Angela embarked on a journey to Europe in 2014, travelling by boat from Egypt to Italy. She and her fellow travellers, documented their entire voyage, and this footage would later become documentary “Crossing” by George Kurian.

Her passion for storytelling and filmmaking grew bigger and she pursued further studies in this field completing a Master’s degree in filmmaking at KASK with the short film ‘Orange Flavoured Love’.

CHEERS! is Angela’s second short film, created during a workshop by esteemed Hungarian director Bela Tarr. It highlights the difficulties of communication between two humans who belong to different cultures and different memories. Is the love between a Syrian and a European strong enough to transcend the differences between them?

Jasmine Revelation is an interview between European journalist and Syrian Artist, Maxime who wants to talk about his inspirations. Persistent in her interview plan, the journalist insists on bringing him back to the Syria he fled. Embarrassed, but dignified, he answers her tit for tat.
