FILM PRODUCTIONS
This collaborative film production platform gravitates around the Cinemaximiliaan project house in Molenbeek, where there is room for a film studio, a recording studio, editing rooms, a kitchen, accommodation and all other facilities needed.
The starting point of the short films we make, is the original idea or script of people involved in the platform with a desire and a passion to make cinema. Film projects are accompanied and mentored by filmmakers with a wide experience in their field. Any subject, approach, genre is potentially possible.
People can involve in the role of directors, actors, set designers, light and sound technicians, camera people, costume designers, make-up artists, musicians, catering, production, logistics, etc.
Film professionals, visual artists and filmmakers are invited to help realize the films, give workshops, masterclasses and mentor projects. Everybody takes part on an equal basis, therefore all participation in the project is based on a voluntary engagement.
We invite filmmakers, actors, costume designers, camera people, sound people, set dressers, film professionals of all fields, students, anybody willing to jump into a new adventure to join in and work together on this project.
Please contact us if you like to get involved.

Jules Mathôt & Individuals of Cinemaximiliaan
Cinemaximiliaan and Jules Mathôt organized filmmaking workshops open to everyone, regardless of prior experience or commitment. Participants took on both creative and technical roles. The theme “our dreams” served as a guide during filming. Forty-one people participated, including newcomers, filmmakers, Cinemaximiliaan staff, and Fedasil tutors. The film reflects the diversity of the participants and includes a piece of everyone.
Anadrôme (18')
Oan Moonens & Fien Bergmans
As the world stands still, water continues to flow. Anadrôme tells the story of two siblings observing and reminiscing about the city they have always called home. When the moment has come for them to leave this place behind, they decide to revisit an old hobby of theirs. On a small boat, sailing along the canal they rid the water of objects left behind. In this dreamlike space we follow them wandering through invisibility as they observe the passing world from a distance. As the night slowly falls, we discover how it feels to be lost in the places we know the most.
HALAQAT RESIDENCY PROJECT
in 2022, we collaborated on the Halaqat project, initiated by the Goethe-Institut Brussels and in collaboration with Atelier Graphoui, SIC and Bozar, which resulted in six short films. The films premiered in January 2023 at Bozar.

Lies and guilt are at the core of Patrick’s relationship with his mother Randa. Over the years, he collected their audio messages and video calls. He now transforms them into a portrait of her life in Lebanon and his in Belgium. By turns moving, provocative and hilarious, Mea Culpa questions the links between national and sexual identities for a young Palestinian emigrant.
Three Tales of Halaqat (23)
Sophie Soukias
In 2021 and 2022, the Goethe Institut and Bozar invited musicians, directors and performers from the Arab world and its diaspora to Brussels as part of their ‘Halaqat’ program. Sophie Soukias captured their coming in three short films of unfettered imagination, constantly pushing the boundaries of reality.
Al Saydeh (15')
Rebecca Hawk
A documentary about dancing life, dancing thoughts, dancing emotions.
Salt in Water (25')
Louay Dabous
Leaving one’s homeland brings about a change in personality, identity and outlook, regardless of the reasons for leaving. Amjad and the filmmaker are both part of the Druze community. With similar cultural backgrounds but different outlooks on life, they discover together how their upbringing in Syria and migration to Europe influenced their decisions, leading them on different paths in their new adopted country.
Zero (35')
Asaad Al-Hilali
Asaad is a respected Iraqi writer and screenwriter. Following the instability in Iraq, he had to leave his country, along with his son Amjaad, a successful blogger. From men of recognized social status, they have become Zeros. As much as Asaad appreciates a feeling of security and appeasement through his exile, Amjaad suffers from this new life. Asaad decides to write a letter of encouragement to his son.
SILENT FILMS LIVE MUSIC
In this production, seven international directors – under scenario guidance from Jaco Van Dormael and Sulaiman Addonia – created their own interpretations on the theme of Solitude and then filmed their stories in a variety of ways. In addition to the recurrent theme, all the films are connected by the format. Always in 4:3, black & white, and without dialogue, but always with a unique and quirky elaboration.
The films formed the foundation for Brussels musical duo Simon Ho (Switzerland) and Hannibal Saad (Lebanon, US) who composed unique musical interpretations together with a diverse musical team. Western and Eastern instruments, sounds and voices meet, taking the audience along on a journey whereby cinematography and music intertwine on stage for an hour to create an experience like in the early days of silent cinema.
The first Silent Films Concert was held at Concertgebouw Brugge in January 2023.
