The Godmother

Marzena Sowa | BE | 2024 | VO FR PL ST EN | 52′

My aunt Niuśka – a strong, funny superwoman, my childhood heroine – lives in a small village in eastern Poland. One day she confessed to me that she has never been happy in her life. Would it have been different if, like me, she had left the country in search of happiness in the West? If she had broken free of the conservative values that still constrain Polish society today?

Biography – Marzena Sowa

Born in Poland in 1979, Marzena Sowa arrived in France in 2001 to complete her studies in Modern Literature at Bordeaux 3 University. After meeting Sylvain Savoia, a comic strip author, she embarked on a career as a scriptwriter in the 9th art. She is the author of several comic strips, including the Marzi series in which she recounts her childhood in communist Poland. This internationally acclaimed autobiographical comic strip was nominated for both the Angoulême Comic Strip Festival and the Eisner Prize. In 2017, she began her training in video at the Agnès Varda School in Brussels. The Godmother is her second documentary film.
